The 2-[5-(6,7-dimethoxyquinolin-4-yloxy)pyrimidin-2-yl]acetic acid used as a starting material was prepared as follows:- A mixture of ethyl 2-(5-benzyloxypyrimidin-2-yl)acetate (J. Agric. Food Chem., 1991, 39, 612-616; 0.47 g), 10% palladium on carbon catalyst (0.1 g), ethyl acetate (10 ml) and ethanol (10 ml) was stirred under 3 atmospheres pressure of hydrogen at ambient temperature for 2 hours. The catalyst was removed by filtration and the solvent was evaporated. There was thus obtained ethyl 2-(5-hydroxypyrimidin-2-yl)acetate (0.296 g); 1H NMR: (DMSOd6) 1.25 (t, 3H), 3.89 (s, 2H), 4.14 (q, 2H), 8.25 (s, 2H); Mass Spectrum: M+H+ 183.
