Preparation 18 To a suspension of ethyl (2S) -2-aminopropanoate hydrochloride (1.0 g) and potassium carbonate (1.8g) inN,N-dimethylformamide (20 ml) was added (bromomethyl) benzene(1.1 g) at ambient tempreture. The reaction mixture was stirred at ambient tempreture for 7 hours. The resulting mixture was diluted with ethyl acetate and washed successively with water and brine. The organic layer was dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, filtered and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography eluting with 20% ethyl acetate/n-hexane to provide a ethyl (2S) -2- (benzylamino) propanoate .IH-NMR (CDCl₃): δl .33-1.27 (6H, m) , 3.37 (IH, q, J = 7.0 Hz), 3.67 (IH, d, J = 12.5 Hz), 3.80 (IH, d, J = 12.5 Hz), 4.19 (2H, q, J = 7.0 Hz), 7.33-7.32 (5H, m)
