A. Ethyl pyridine-2-yl carbonate. To a mixture of 2-hydroxy pyridine (2.0 g, 21.0 mmol) and potassium carbonate (7.3 g, 52.6 mmol) in acetone (40 mL) was added ethyl chloro formate (5.7 g, 52.6 mmol). After heating at 40 °C overnight, the reaction mixture was passed through a celite plug and the solvent removed under reduced pressure. The crude material was dissolved in ethyl acetate, washed with water (4x), dried over sodium sulfate, filtered, and condensed to yield the title compound (2.8 g, 80%). MS (ESI) m/z 168.2 [M+l]+.
