Synthesis of gabapentin ethyl ester hydrochloride: To a solution of gabapentin (5.00 g, 29.19mmol) in absolute ethanol (65 mL) at reflux was added thionyl chloride (9.57mL, 131.39 mmol) over a period of 20 min. Reaction mixture was refluxed for 3 hand concentrated. Traces of thionyl chloride were removed by azeotropicdistillation with benzene (2 x 10 mL) to afford the ethyl ester of gabapentinas its hydrochloride salt (7.00 g, 100% yield) as a white solid. 1H NMR (300 MHz, CD3OD) d 1.26 (t, J = 7.1 Hz, 3H),1.35 - 1.54 (m, 10H), 2.53 (s, 2H), 3.04 (s, 2H), 4.15 (q, J = 7.1 Hz, 2H).
