To a mixture of 1-chloro-6-methoxyisoquioline (16.8 g, 87 mmol) and phenol (67 g) was added powdered potassium hydroxide (8.4 g). The mixture was heated under a nitrogen atmosphere to 140° C. for 3 h, allowed to cool to ambient temperature and subsequently diluted with 280 ml of 3N sodium hydroxide solution and 500 ml of dichloromethane. The organic layer was washed with 2N sodium hydroxide, water and brine, dried over magnesium sulphate and dried in vacuo to give 6-methoxy-1-phenoxyisoquinoline (21.3 g, 98%), ESI-MS: 251.8 [M+H]+
