[0345] A solution of 2-(2-bromo-5-nitrophenyl)acetonitrile (15 g, 62.2 mmol) in MeOH/HCl (1000 mL, 4M) was stirred at room temperature overnight. The solvent was evaporated, saturated sodium bicarbonate was added, and the aqueous layer was extracted with ethyl acetate 3 times. The combined organic phase was washed with brine, dried over sodium sulfate and concentrated to give methyl 2-(2-bromo-5- nitrophenyl)acetate (14 g, yield 82%). 1H NMR: 400 MHz CDC13 δ 8.18-8.17 (m, 1H), 8.02-8.00 (m, 1H), 7.77-7.75 (m, 1H), 3.80 (s, 2H), 3.65 (s, 3H).
