Steps:
3-(methylsulfonyl)-5-nitro-benzoic acid methyl ester (34 g; 0.14 mol) was dissolved in 350 mL of methanol, 10ml of 98% sulfuric acid were added and the mixture refluxed for 10 hours. After cooling the precipitate was filtered andwashed with methanol. Concentrating the filtrate yields further material. 32 g (0.12 mmol;88%yield) of 3-(methylsulfonyl)-5-nitro-benzoic acid methyl ester were obtained as a colorless solid.
