General Procedure for the Methanolysis of the Meldrum 4a-b Acid Derivative (GP2)

General procedure: The meldrum 3a-c acid derivative (1.0 equiv.) was dissolved in excess methanol and the reaction flask was equipped with a reflux apparatus under an argon atmosphere. The reaction was heated at reflux for 2 hours, then the heating was stopped and the mixture allowed to cool spontaneously to room temperature and stirred overnight. The progress of the reaction was followed by TLC in an EtOAc/cyclohexane mixture at 1:1 and revealed in iodine. On completion, the solvent was removed under vacuum and the oily product was used raw in the following step.
