2.3 Representative procedure for the synthesis of α-chloroketones

General procedure: A 5 mL oven-dried reaction vessel equipped with a magnetic stirrer bar was charged with styrene (1a, 20.8 mg,0.20 mmol), Ru(bpy)3Cl2 (1.92 mg, 0.003 mmol, 1.5 mol%), PhI(OAc)2 (64.4 mg, 0.20 mmol, 1.0 equiv.) and CHCl3(2c, 2.0 mL). The reaction vessel was exposed to blue LED (450-455 nm, 3 W) at room temperature in air withstirring for 12 h. After completion of the reaction, the mixture was concentrated to yield the crude product, which wasfurther purified by flash chromatography (silica gel, petroleum ether/ethyl acetate = 10:1 to 5:1) to give the desiredproduct 5a.
