2.1 Step 1
Step 1 : A solution of benzyl carbamate (90.0 g, 0.59 mol, 1.0 eq.) and monohydrate dihydroxyacetic acid 1 (60.3 g, 1.1 mol, 1.1 eq.) in toluene (840 mL) was introduced in a 2 L flask and the solution was heated at 40°C for 1.5 hours. Half of the solvent was concentrated down under reduce pressure. Toluene (540 mL) was added and half of the solvent was concentrated down under reduce pressure. Toluene (540 mL) was added and the reaction was stirred at 40°C for 2 hours and then cooled down to 20°C. The white solid was filtered, rinsed with toluene and dried under vacuum. The expected compound 2 (133.0 g, quant, yield, 95% purity (:H NMR)) was obtained as a white solid. :H NMR (400 MHz, DMSO-ds) : δ (ppm) : 5.05 (s, 2H), 5.21 (d, J = 8.8 Hz, 1H), 6.62-6.80 (br s, 1H), 7.26-7.44 (m, 5H), 8.14 (d, J= 8.8 Hz, 1H), 12.10-13.60 (br s, 1H).
