Experiment 12 (With Catalytic Amounts of tetrabutylammoninum iodide)[0051]Zinc metal powder (4.90 g, 0.075 mol, 1.5 eq.), lithium chloride (2.11 g, 0.05 mol, 1 eq.), tetrabutylammonium iodide (5.54 g, 0.015 mol, 0.3 eq.) and THF (40 ml) were suspended. The suspension was heated to 50° C. and TMSCl (0.27 g, 2.5 mmol, 0.05 eq.) was added. Five minutes later neopentyl bromide (7.55 g, 0.05 mol, 1.0 eq.) was added at once. The reaction mixture was heated to 60° C. and the conversion was monitored over time by GC analysis. The reaction went to 65% completion after 18 h. Continuous heating gave 97% completion after 64 h.
