Octadecylmagnesium bromide was prepared from magnesium turnings (1.22 g, 50 mmoles) in THF (50 ml) and octadecyl bromide (16.67 g, 50 mmoles) in THF (15 ml) under argon. After adding additional THF (10 ml) the solution was filtered warm and divided into two equal portions.
