Reaction Conditions:

with ammonia;water in 1,4-dioxane at 120; for 16 h;

Steps:

l-Cyclohex-l-en-l-yl-3-(dimethylamino)propan-l-one (17.9 g, 99 mmol) was combined with 1 ,4-dioxane (40 mL) and concentrated NH₄OH (40 mL) in a stainless steel pressure vessel. The vessel was sealed then heated in an oil bath at 120 ⁰C. After 16 hr the mixture was cooled to RT and concentrated. The residue was taken up in CH₂Cl₂, dried (MgSO₄), filtered, and concentrated to give octahydroquinolin-4(lH)-one as an amber oil (14.77 g, 98%). The crude material was used immediately in the next step without purification.
