Reaction Conditions:
with potassium hydroxide;bromine in water at 5 - 85; for 1.5 h;
Steps:
To a solution of KOH (6g, 154mmol) in water (46ml_) at 5°C is added slowly bromine followed by 3-hydroxy-6-methyl-pyrazine-2-carboxylic acid amide (2.6g, 17.0 mmol) with rapid stirring. The reaction mixture is warmed to 85°C and stirred for Ih 30 min. The reaction is cooled to 200C and acidified with HCI cone, basified with ammonium hydroxide cone, and left stand overnight at r.t. The solid obtained is filtered and washed with cold water, dried with air and then dried further in a vacuum oven at 600C to give 3-amino-5-methyl-pyrazin-2-ol as a beige solid (1.63g, 76%).
