General procedure: A mixture of compound 3 (639 mg, 3.0 mmol) and potassium tert-butoxide (561 mg, 5.0 mmol) in DMF (5 ml) was stirred at 80 °C for 3 h.
The reaction mixture was cooled down to room temperature and poured into ice-cold water, and the white precipitates were filtered off and recrystallized from EtOH to give 4-(benzofuran-2-yl)pyridine derivative 4.
