To a stirred solution of (6-methyl-3-pyridinyl)methanol (166 mg, 1.35 mmol) in dichloromethane (10 ml) was added thionyl chloride (108 μl, 1.48 mmol) giving a colourless solution. After 30 minutes the mixture was concentrated giving a brown solid (240 mg, quant, yield) that was used directly in the next step without purification. 1H NMR (500 MHz, CDCl3) δ 8.79 (1 H, br. s.), 8.55 (1 H, dd, J=8.3, 1.6 Hz), 7.93 (1 H, d, J=8.4 Hz), 4.89 (2 H, s), 2.77 (3 H, s).
