Steps:

40 Pyrrole-3-carboxylic Acid
EXAMPLE 40 Pyrrole-3-carboxylic Acid Methyl pyrrole-3-carboxylate (3 g., 24 mmoles) was combined with 40 ml. of methanol and 40 ml. of 1 N sodium hydroxide and refluxed for 1 hour. The methanol was allowed to evaporate, the aqueous residue was diluted with approximately one volume of water and extracted with ether. The aqueous phase was cooled in an ice-water bath and acidified with conc. hydrochloric acid. A small amount of insoluble material was removed by filtration and the filtrate was extracted three times with ethyl acetate. The combined ethyl acetate extracts were back-washed with water and then with saturated brine, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered and evaporated to a gummy solid. Trituration with hexane gave crystalline pyrrole-3-carboxylic acid (1.8 g., m.p. 115°-120° C., m/e 111), recovered by filtration.
