Solketal methacrylate synthesis

4synthesis methods
Solketal methacrylate (SMA) (the precursor monomer for GMA), synthesized by reacting solketal with methacryloyl chloride, was polymerized under typical ATRP conditions with THF as the solvent at 40 °C, employing the synthesized POSS based initiator, and CuCl/N,N,N,N,N-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine as the catalyst system.

R.4 (Preparation of ketal group-containing monomer)

Referential Example 4 (Preparation of ketal group-containing monomer) Into the apparatus for monomer synthesis were charged 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolan-4-methanol (DMDOMeOH), toluene, triethylamine (equimols to DMLOMeOH) and phenothiazine (2% of DMDOMeOH) and the mixture was stirred at room temperature. Methacrylic anhydride (90 mol% of DMDOMeOH) was dropped into the mixture at room temperature, then the reaction was continued at 110°C for 10 hours. The reaction mixture was extracted with hexane, neutralized with an aqueous solution of sodium carbonate, and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. After addition of phenothiazine (2% of DMDOMeOH), the extract was concentrated under reduced pressure at 80°C. The crude product was subjected to vacuum distillation using Vigoureux column to give 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolane-4-yl-methyl methacrylate in a yield of 64% based on charged DMDOMeOH. The product having a boiling point of 52-53°C at 0.45 mmHg is hereinafter called methacrylic acid ester (B-4).
