Reaction Conditions:

Stage #1: thietane-3-carbonitrilewith lithium aluminium tetrahydride in diethyl ether at 0 - 20; for 0.5 h;
Stage #2: with water;sodium hydroxide in diethyl ether at 0 - 20; for 0.25 h;

Steps:

Preparation of thietan-3-ylmethanamine

To a solution of lithium aluminium hydride (540 mg) in diethyl ether (30ml) was added in a suspension of thietane-3-carbonitrile (1.4 g) in diethyl ether (30ml) at 0°C then the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 30 min. The mixture was then diluted with ether (50ml), cooled to 0°C then water (0.55 ml), 15% aqueous sodium hydroxide (0.55ml) and water (1.60 ml) were added. The mixture was allowed to warm to room temperature and stirred for 15 min. Anhydrous magnesium sulphate was added and stirring was continued for 15 min, then the suspension was filtered on a celite pad. The solvent was evaporated to dryness to give the crude title product as an oil (980 mg). 'H-NMR (CDC1₃, 400 MHz): 3.21 (m, 3H); 3.00 (m, 2H); 2.86 (m, 2H).
