Tosyl chloride synthesis

14synthesis methods
Tosyl chloride is a by-product from the production of ortho-toluenesulfonyl chloride (a precursor for the synthesis of the common food additive and catalyst saccharin), via the chlorosulfonation of toluene:
CH3C6H5+ SO2Cl2→ CH3C6H4SO2Cl + HCl

Yield:98-59-9 99%

Reaction Conditions:

with N-chloro-succinimide in acetonitrile at 20; for 2 h;Reagent/catalyst;Solvent;

Steps:

4.2. General Procedure for Synthesis of Sulfonyl Chloride 3 or Sulfonyl Bromide 4

General procedure: N-Chlorosuccinimide 2a or N-bromosuccinimide 2b (0.6 mmol, 2.0 equiv) was addedto a solution of sulfonyl hydrazide 1 (0.3 mmol) in CH3CN (2 mL) in one portion. Themixture was stirred at room temperature for 2 h. The solvent was removed, and the residuewas purified by flash column chromatography (petroleum ether/ethyl acetate) to providethe corresponding sulfonyl chloride 3 or sulfonyl bromide 4.
