Chemical Properties
Magnesium Sulphate Heptahydrate crystallises in the rhombohedral crystal system as rare acicular or fibrous crystals. The appearance is colourless to white with yellow, green and pink tints. It is a soft mineral with a Mohs hardness of about 2.0 to 2.5 and a specific gravity as low as 1.67 g/ml. it is soluble in water. It absorbs water from the air and transforms into a hexahydrate, losing one water molecule and changing to a monoclinic structure.
Uses
Magnesium Sulphate Heptahydrate, also known as laxative salt, is a magnesium sulphate hydrate. It can be used as a pharmaceutical preparation for the treatment of constipation, convulsions, rashes, pre-eclampsia and eclampsia, and as a bath salt, electrolyte supplement and desiccant in organic synthesis.
