| Uses | Antipsychotic. | | Brand name | Haldol (Ortho-McNeil). | | General Description | Haloperidol decanoate, 4-[4-(4-chlorophenyl)-4-hydroxypiperidino]-4-fluorobutyrophenonedecanoate (Haldol Decanoate), is the decanoate ester(prodrug) of haloperidol. Peak plasma concentrations occurwithin 3 to 9 days and then decrease slowly. Haloperidol decanoatehas no intrinsic activity. Haloperidol decanoate undergoes hydrolysis by plasma and/or tissue esterases toform haloperidol and decanoic acid, subsequently; haloperidolis metabolized in the liver. The pharmacological effectsare those of haloperidol, which is released by bioconversion.Haloperidol decanoate is indicated for the treatment of longtermmaintenance in schizophrenia, psychoses especiallyparanoid, and other mental and behavioral problems. |
