A solution of 2-chloroisonicotinic acid (2.0 g, 12.69 mmol) in thionyl chloride (15 mL) was heated at 80 °C for 3 hours. The mixture was concentrated in vacuo and the residue resuspended in DCM (3 x 10 mL) and concentrated to remove the excess thionyl chloride to give the title compound as yellow oil (2.2 g, 100%). LCMS-C: (MeOH quench) RT 1 .79 min; m/z 172.1 [M+H]⁺
