2.4 Catalytic study of stabilized AgNPs in the reduction of nitroaromatics

General procedure: The reduction of nitroaromatics was studied by using UV visiblespectrophotometry following a reported method with minor modification. 42 In a typical reaction, 1 mL of an aqueous solution of 4-nitrophenol (1 mM) was mixed with 25 mL of distilled water containing 0.1 mg of the AgNPs.The suspension was then stirred at room temperature in the inert atmosphere of N2 for 30 min. The reduction process was started by the addition of 4 mL of a freshly prepared aqueous solution of NaBH4 (0.33 M). The degradation process was monitored by UV-Visible spectrophotometer. An aliquot of 1.5 mL was withdrawn in a cuvette of optical path length 1 cm at a regular interval and the absorbance was measured in the range of 200-800 nm. The process of reduction was monitored by measuring the change in absorbance at 400 nm. The catalyst was separated by centrifugation after completion of the reaction. The product was extracted with diethyl ether/dichloromethane and concentrated by a rotary evaporator for GC-MS analysis.
