[Chemical Properties]

Colorless, viscous liquid; aromaticmenthol-like odor. Combustible.
[General Description]

Colorless viscous liquids with a menthol-like odor. Less dense than water. Flash point 136°F. Vapors heavier than air. May be toxic by ingestion. Used as a solvent and to make soaps and detergents.
[Air & Water Reactions]

Flammable. Soluble in water.
[Reactivity Profile]

METHYLCYCLOHEXANOL is incompatible with the following: Strong oxidizers .
[Health Hazard]

May cause toxic effects if inhaled or absorbed through skin. Inhalation or contact with material may irritate or burn skin and eyes. Fire will produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Vapors may cause dizziness or suffocation. Runoff from fire control or dilution water may cause pollution.
[Fire Hazard]

HIGHLY FLAMMABLE: Will be easily ignited by heat, sparks or flames. Vapors may form explosive mixtures with air. Vapors may travel to source of ignition and flash back. Most vapors are heavier than air. They will spread along ground and collect in low or confined areas (sewers, basements, tanks). Vapor explosion hazard indoors, outdoors or in sewers. Runoff to sewer may create fire or explosion hazard. Containers may explode when heated. Many liquids are lighter than water.
[Hazard]

Toxic by ingestion. Eye and upper respira-tory tract irritant.
[Potential Exposure]

Methylcyclohexanol is used as a lacquer solvent; as a blending agent in textile soaps and as an antioxidant in lubricants.
[First aid]

If this chemical gets into the eyes, remove any contact lenses at once and irrigate immediately for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting upper and lower lids. Seek medical attention immediately. If this chemical contacts the skin, remove contaminated clothing and wash immediately with soap and water. Seek medical attention immediately. If this chemical has been inhaled, remove from exposure, begin rescue breathing (using universal precautions, including resuscitation mask) if breathing has stopped and CPR if heart action has stopped. Transfer promptly to a medical facility. When this chemical has been swallowed, get medical attention. Give large quantities of water and induce vomiting. Do not make an unconscious person vomit. Personal Protective Methods: Wear protective eye protection, gloves, and clothing to prevent any reasonable probability of skin or eye contact. Safety equipment suppliers/manufacturers can provide recommendations on the most protective glove/clothing material for your operation. All protective clothing (suits, gloves, footwear, headgear) should be clean, available each day, and put on before work. Contact lenses should not be worn when working with this chemical. Wear splash-proof chemical goggles and face shield when working with liquid full facepiece respiratory protection is worn. Employees should wash immediately with soap when skin is wet or contaminated. Provide emergency showers and eyewash.
[Shipping]

UN2617 Methylhexylhexanone, flammable, Hazard Class: 3; Labels: 3-Flammable liquid.
[Incompatibilities]

Vapors may form explosive mixture with air. Incompatible with oxidizers (chlorates, nitrates, peroxides, permanganates, perchlorates, chlorine, bromine, fluorine, etc.); contact may cause fires or explosions. Keep away from alkaline materials, strong bases, strong acids, oxoacids, epoxides. Attacks some plastics, rubber, and coatings.
[Description]

2-Methylcyclohexanol is a straw-coloredliquid with a weak, menthol-like odor. The odor thresholdis 490 ppm (higherthan theOEL). Molecularweight= 114.21; Specific gravity (H2O:1)= 0.92; Boilingpoint= 155- 180℃ (technical grade); Freezing/Meltingpoint= -50C; Vapor pressure = 2 mmHg at 30℃; Flashpoint= 65- 68℃; Autoignitiontemperature = 296℃.Hazard Identification (based on NFPA-704 M RatingSystem): Health 0, Flammability 2, Reactivity 0. Slightlysoluble in water.
[Waste Disposal]

Dissolve or mix the material with a combustible solvent and burn in a chemical incinerator equipped with an afterburner and scrubber. All federal, state, and local environmental regulations must be observed
[Production Methods]

Methylcyclohexanol is produced by hydrogenating m- and p-cresols. Methylcyclohexanol can exist as three separate isomers, ortho, meta, and para, or as a mixture of isomers. The commercial product consists essentially of the meta and para isomers. Methylcyclohexanol is used as a solvent in lacquers, a blending agent in textile soaps, and an antioxidant in lubricants. In addition, methylcyclohexanol dissolves gums, oils, resins, and waxes.
[storage]

Color Code—Red: Flammability Hazard: Store ina flammable liquid storage area or approved cabinet awayfrom ignition sources and corrosive and reactive materials.Prior to working with this chemical you should be trainedon its proper handling and storage. Methylcyclohexanolmust be stored to avoid contact with strong oxidizers (suchas peroxides, chlorates, perchlorates, nitrates, and permanganates), since violent reactions occur. Sources of ignition, such as smoking and open flames, are prohibited wheremethylcyclohexanol is used, handled, or stored in a mannerthat could create a potential fire or explosion hazard.
