Industrielle Verwendung

Polyphenylene oxide is a plastic that is notablefor its high strength and broad temperatureresistance. There are two major types: phenyleneoxide (PPO) and modified phenyleneoxide (Noryl). These materials have a deflectiontemperature ranging from 100 to 174°C at 2MPa. Their coefficients of linear thermal expansionare among the lowest for engineering thermoplastics.
Polyphenylene oxide (PPO) is the basis for an engineering plastic characterized by chemical, thermal, and dimensional stability. The PPO resin is normally blended with another compatible but cheaper resin such as high-impact polystyrene. The blends are cheaper and more processible than PPO and still retain many of the advantages of PPO by itself.
PPO is outstanding in its resistance to water, and in its maximum useful temperature range (about 170 to 300 C). In spite of the high softening point, the resins, including glass-reinforced compositions, can be molded and extruded in conventional equipment. Uses include medical instruments, pump parts, and insulation. Structurally modified resins are also of interest and the general family of resins may be expected to replace other materials in many applications.
Commercial products can be processed by injection or compression molding, as well as by slurry or electrostatic coating; reinforcement with glass fibers is also commonly practiced. The combination of properties is useful in such applications as electronic pumps and automotive components and coatings, especially where environmental stability is required.
