Nanomaterials or nanocrystalline materials arecommonly defined as crystalline materials thathave an average particle or grain size of lessthan 100 nm (0.1μm) and 10,000 times smallerthan grains in conventional materials.
A deliberate distinction is made betweennanocrystalline materials and crystalline materialsthat are submicron. Submicron materialshave an average particle or grain size of lessthan 1μm.
The resultant properties of nanocrystallinematerials thus have a much greater dependenceon the contributions of interfacial atoms thansubmicron materials. Interfacial atoms are thoseon the surface of a particle, or in the grainboundaries of a consolidated material. Someunconventional mechanical, chemical, electrical, optical, and magnetic properties that nanocrystallinematerials exhibit are attributed tothis greater dependence on the contributions ofinterfacial atoms.
The phase nanophase materials encompassesthe new tools that are letting scientistsand engineers characterize and manipulatematerials at the nanoscale level.
