Reactivity Profile
Methyl isocyanide is a reactive amphiphilic reagents for 1,1-additions to form heterocyclic N-t-butylimines, iminoyl halides, α-hydroxy amides, α,β-enals, α-acylamino amides via Passerini reactions, and polymethylene imines; oxidative additions to isocyanates and isothiocyanates.
Precautions
It should be freshly distilled before use. It is a foul-smelling liquid that should be stored and used in a fume hood. Contaminated equipment should be washed with 5% methanolic sulfuric acid.
