本品は、子宮内で動物の胚を包んでいる液である。
解説
胎児（胚）と羊膜の間にあって羊膜腔を満たす液体。ヒトでは初め無色透明，妊娠末期には灰白色ないし帯黄色。普通600〜1000cc。羊水過多は2000cc以上で，中絶，早期破水，弛緩(しかん)出血をもたらす。羊水過少は比較的まれであるが奇形の要因となる。羊水は羊膜類（爬虫(はちゅう)類，鳥類，哺乳(ほにゅう)類）の胚を保護する役割をもち，両生類以下では水中にある初期発生を，卵殻内の母体内で過ごすことを可能にする。→関連項目出生前診断｜胎児｜胎児診断法｜胎便｜破水

使用
Some consider amniotic fluid simply an animal protein serving as a surface film-forming agent with moisturizing properties. others claim it is nourishing, has anti-toxic properties, acts as an epithelial stimulant, and can diffuse through the skin. Research indicates that amniotic fluid seems to have a positive effect on wound healing and cellular regeneration. Advocates of its use point out that animal sacrifice is not required to obtain the substance because the amniotic fluid (the fluid surrounding the cow embryo in utero) can be extracted from live animals in their third to sixth month of gestation, supposedly without harm to the animal or fetus.
