Perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) are a group of organics used in the manufacture of fluoropolymer coatings and products that are resistant to heat, oil, stains, grease and water. | | Uses | Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA) is used as a surfactant in the emulsion polymerisation of fluoropolymers for the manufacture of products such as Teflon and Gore-Tex. PFOA is particularly used in the manufacture of PTFE. However, manufacturers are now using a new process that does not require this chemical. | | Definition | ChEBI: Perfluorooctanoic acid is a fluoroalkanoic acid that is perfluorinated octanoic acid. It has a role as an environmental contaminant, a xenobiotic, a carcinogenic agent, a surfactant and an endocrine disruptor. It is functionally related to a perfluorooctane and an octanoic acid. | | Hazard | Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA) persists in the environment and does not break down.
