| Ethylhexyl Salicylate Usage And Synthesis |
Description | Ethylhexyl salicylate (EHS) is an organic UV filter commonly used in sunscreens to protect people from the UV radiation. The widespread use of EHS will enter the aquatic environment along with human activities.
| Chemical Properties | Ethylhexyl salicylate is a colorless oily liquid with a slight floral odor. The salicylate portion of the molecule absorbs ultraviolet light, protecting skin from the harmful effects of exposure to sunlight. The ethylhexanol portion is a fatty alcohol, adding emollient and oil-like (water resistant) properties.
| Uses |
Ethylhexyl salicylate is often used to improve affinity and reduce photodegradation of other sunscreen ingredients (such as oxybenzone and avobenzone).
| benefits | Ethylhexyl Salicylate is a very effective UV-B absorber and has a wide use in sunscreen and skin care products to give UV-B radiation protection. Other benefits include being used for low-medium SPF products, an excellent SPF booster in high SPF products, oil soluble, and easily incorporated into preparations such as creams, lotions, oils, and milks.
| Side effects |
Ethylhexyl salicylate has a good safety profile,However, it does have some minor sensitization potential; with some individuals experiencing minimal to mild skin irritation.
