SLS & SLES HARMFUL TO HUMANS?
There are rumors that shampoos, shower gels and toothpastes and other personal care products contain SLS and SLES,these substances whichcan penetrate systemic tissues such as eyes, brain, heart and liver, and stay in the human body for a long time; they will destroy immunity System, causing skin inflammation; long-term inhalation of these substances may even cause cancer. Are the rumors true?
The answer is: Currently no confirmed information showing that SLS or SLES can cause cancer. They are still safe in personal care products.
What are SLS and SLES?
SLS and SLES are short for Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate .Both can be used as a cleaning agent, emulsifier and denaturant in personal care products ,like body and skin cleaning products, hair cleaning and care products, hair dyeing products and oral cleaning products.
Skin Irritation
According to the Cosmetic Ingredient Review of the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association, in the skin contact tests,
the content of SLS more than 2% will be irritating the skin. However, rinsing with water can reduce irritation.
And for SLES, some studies shows that it has a stimulating effect on the eyes and skin of experimental animals
and other subjects, and the irritation depend on the concentration.
Though SLS may cause irritations, there is no research confirmed that products containing these two substances
can cause cancer. The report concludes that SLS and SLES are safe for use in personal care products that are
discontinuous and short-lived; if used inproducts that been in contact with the skin for a long time, the concentration
should not exceed 1% . It is also safe for SLES to be used in cosmetics and personal care.
No matter which one may cause more or less irritation to the skin, as long as the formula is appropriate, it can produce
effective decontamination and mild nature products.
Conclusions
We find that the personal care products marked with SLS or SLES are mainly rinse-type.
And they need to be rinsed with clean water after use. Although these two substances
may irritate the skin and eyes, as long as they are used correctly according to the product instructions
and rinsed thoroughly after use, the product will have limited contact time with skin.
Therefore, the use of products containing these two substances has little chance
of causing serious adverse reactions to the human body.
Consumers should choose appropriate personal care products according to their hair and
skin characteristics. For example, people with oily hair should not use too moisturizing shampoo,
otherwise it may cause itchy head or dandruff because the oil is not completely removed.
If you feel unwell after using any product, you should stop using it immediately.
