Indications and side effects of Polymyxin B sulfate in combination with Trimethoprim

Indications

Polymyxin B sulfate and Trimethoprim is an ophthalmic preparation, belonging to the antibiotic class of drugs, which in combination can be used to treat eye infections, including acute bacterial conjunctivitis and blepharoconjunctivitis. They work by killing bacteria or stopping the growth of bacteria and, therefore, should only be used to treat eye infections caused by bacteria.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Polymyxin B sulfate and Trimethoprim eye drops include redness, burning, stinging, or increased itching in the eyes. Other possible side effects include changes or blurring of vision, increased sensitivity to light, tearing, rash around the eyes, and swelling of the eyelids. Prolonged or repeated use of this medication may also lead to other types of eye infections, including fungal infections, accompanied by eye symptoms such as pain, swelling, thick discharge, or bleeding. Very severe allergic reactions to this medication are rare. Contact your doctor promptly if you develop a rash, itching/swelling (especially of the eyes/face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing.
