Introduction

p-Anisic Acid, also known as 4-methoxybenzoic Acid or draconic Acid, is one of the isomers of anisic Acid. The term "anisic acid" often refers to this form specifically. It is a white crystalline solid which is insoluble in water, highly soluble in alcohols, and soluble in ether and ethyl acetate.

Source

4-Methoxybenzoic Acid is derived from p-methyl phenol, a compound obtained from petrochemical sources. Chemical reactions involving methylation and oxidation steps transform p-methyl phenol into P-Anisic Acid. It belongs to the class of organic compounds known as p-methoxybenzoic acids and derivatives. These are benzoic acids in which the hydrogen atom at position 4 of the benzene ring is replaced by a methoxy group. P-Anisic Acid is a drug. P-Anisic Acid exists in all eukaryotes, ranging from yeast to humans. P-Anisic Acid is a faint, sweet, and cadaverous-tasting compound. Outside the human body, p-anisic Acid has been detected but not quantified in several foods, such as anises, cocoa beans, fennels, and German camomiles. This could make p-anisic Acid a potential biomarker for consuming these foods. While it can occur naturally in plants, commercial production relies on synthetic methods for consistency and efficiency.

Uses

4-methoxybenzoic Acid is suitable for perfuming, aromatizing, regulating pH values, anti-inflammatory treatment and combating micro-organisms in cosmetic or dermatologic products, as an active ingredient against specific pathogenic germs in skin treating products and/or for aromatizing and/or preserving foodstuffs or other perishable products. P-Anisic Acid finds multiple applications in cosmetics due to its antimicrobial properties and ability to extend product shelf life. It serves as a preservative agent, inhibiting the growth of bacteria and fungi in skincare and haircare formulations. Additionally, P-Anisic Acid is a fragrance ingredient, imparting a subtle, pleasant aroma to cosmetic products. Its versatility allows for use in various cosmetic formulations, including creams, lotions, shampoos, and more.

Safety

P-Anisic Acid is generally regarded as safe for cosmetic use. It has low toxicity and is well-tolerated by most individuals. However, like any cosmetic ingredient, it may cause mild skin irritation in sensitive individuals.
