General procedure: To a stirring solution of appropriate amines (30 mmol) inacetonitrile (30 mL), 37% HCl was added (2.5 mL, 30mmol) at 0 °C, which formed a white solid in 3 minutes.Then propionic acid (2.5 mL), dihydroxyacetone (4.5 g, 25mmol), and KSCN (2.9 g, 30 mmol) were added. The reactionmixture was refluxed at 70 °C for 3 hours. The formedprecipitate was filtered and washed with water and ethanol togive compounds 10 and 11.(1-benzyl-2-mercapto-1H-imidazol-5-yl)methanol (10).Yield 98%; 229.4 °C; IR (CCl3) υ (cm-1) 2030-3484 (O-Halcoholic), LC-MS (ESI) m/z 221.0000 (M+H+).
