Synthesis of Alkyl Aryl Sulfides; General Procedure

General procedure: To a screw-capped test tube, 1,10-phenanthroline (18 mg, 0.10mmol), iodobenzene (0.5 mmol), potassium carbonate (138.2 mg,1.000 mmol), CuI (19 mg, 0.10 mmol), 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (1mL), alkyl benzoate (2 mmol), and hexamethyldisilathiane (356.8 mg,2.000 mmol) were successively added under an ambient atmosphere.After the tube was sealed with a cap, the mixture was heated at120 °C for 14 h. After the reaction, H2O (3 mL) was added to the mixture,and the organic layer was then extracted with EtOAc (3 × 3 mL).The combined organic phases were dried over Na2SO4 and were evaporatedunder reduced pressure. The crude material was purified bysilica gel column chromatography to give the corresponding alkyl arylsulfide.
