To a solution of 4-piperidin-4-ylmethyl-benzonitrile (3.6 g, 18 mmol) in dioxane (105 mL) and water (52 mL) di-tert-butyl dicarbonate (5.44 g, 25 mmol) was added and the reaction mixture was stirred overnight at room temperature. After concentration the residue was partitioned between water and chloroform, the organic layer was dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated in vacuo to yield 4.0 g (74 %) of the title compound as a yellowish oil, which solidifies on standing. MS (EI) 323.1 (M+Na⁺).
