Preparation of tri(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl)methane
A mixture of 1,3,5-trichlorobenzene (10.14 g, 55.9 mmol), anhydrous chloroform (0.5 mL, 6.2 mmol) and anhydrous aluminium chloride (0.91 g, 6.8 mmol) was heated at 80° C. for 2.5 h in a glass pressure vessel.
After cooling to room temperature, the reaction mixture was poured into 1 M hydrochloric acid and extracted with chloroform three times and dried over sodium sulfate.
The solvent was evaporated and the product was purified by silica gel chromatography eluting with petroleum ether.
A white solid (2.8 g, 82%) was obtained.
1H NMR and mass spectrometry results confirm that product was tri(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl)methane.
