To a 20.0 mL of anhydrous THF solution containing phthalic anhydride (3.0 g, 20 mmol) at 0 °C, was added dropwise the fresh-prepared tert-butylmagnesium chloride/THF (40 mmol) solution. The mixture was then gradually warmed up to room temperature and stirred overnight. Then 5.0 mL of saturated NH₄Cl solution was added slowly into the mixture at 0 °C and the pH value of the mixture was adjusted to two using 1 M HCl solution. After extraction with Et₂O and removal of the solvent, 3.7 g of yellow solid was obtained without further purification.
