To a suspension of phthalimide 17 (22.82 g, 65.9 mmol) in absolute EtOH (200 ml) was added hydrazine hydrate (6 ml, 123.7 mmol) and the reaction mixture heated to reflux under argon for 1.5 h. After cooling to room temperature, solids were removed by filtration and the filtrate concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was re-suspended in hexane (100 ml) and the mixture was filtered. The filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure then dried by concentration from EtOH and then toluene to give amine 18 as a thick yellow oil. Yield (10.63 g, 75%): 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 7.06-7.15 (m, 3H), 6.84 (ddd, J = 8.0, 2.5, 1.2 Hz, IH), 3.96 (t, J= 5.3 Hz, 2H), 3.07 (t, J = 5.1 Hz, 2H), 1.43 (s, 2H).
