Reaction Conditions:

with ammonium persulfate in water for 1 h;Reflux;

Steps:

Lutidine-N-methoxide (2 g, 8 mmol) was dissolved in 25 mL of methanol and heated to reflux. To this mixture a solution of ammonium persulfate (456 mg, 4 mmol) in 3 mL of water was added. The reflux was continued for 1 hour. The crude was cooled to roomtemperature, and pH was adjusted to 7 using 10% NaOH. The crude was filtered and evaporated to dryness. The final compound was purified on silica gel, to obtain 440 mg of the desired intermediate (iic) as a white solid. Yield: 40%. ‘H NMR (400 MHz, Chloroform-d) ö:6.88 (s, 2H), 4.58 (s, 2H), 2.41 (s, 6H). ‘3C NMR (101 MHz, Chloroform-d) ö: 157.78,150.71, 117.80, 63.43, 24.27.
