To a solution 2-methyl-furan-3-methanol (0.47g, 4.18mmol), N-methyl morpholine N-oxide (0.58g, 5. 02mmol), and crushed, dried, and activated 4A sieves (2. 0g) in anhydrous dichloromethane (15ml) is added tetrapropyl ammonium peruthenate (0.14g, 0. 42minol). The reaction mixture is stirred for one hour at room temperature, then filtered through a silica gel plug and eluted with ethyl acetate. The filtrate is concentrated ira vacuo to give 2-methyl-furan-3-carboxaldehyde (0.33g, 72%) which is used without further purification. lH NMR (CDC13) : 6 = 9.88 (1H, s), 7.25 (1H, s), 6.63 (1H, s), 2.55 (3H, s).
