Steps:

[Intermediate 30]-2-(Piperazin-1-yl)pyridine-3-carboxamide

2-(piperazin-1-yl)pyridine-3-carbonitrile (250 mg, 1.33 mmol) was suspended in conc. sulfuric acid (5 ml) and stirred at 100° C. for 19 h. The reaction mixture was then diluted with water (30 ml), basified to pH 14 with aq. sat. NaOH and extracted with chloroform/isopropanol (9:1, 3×30 ml). The combined organics were concentrated under reduced pressure to afford the title compound as a tan solid (128 mg, 47%). 1H NMR (500 MHz, Chloroform-d) δ 8.55 (s, 1H), 8.40 (dd, J=4.8, 2.0 Hz, 1H), 8.31 (dd, J=7.6, 2.0 Hz, 1H), 7.09 (dd, J=7.6, 4.8 Hz, 1H), 5.90 (s, 1H), 3.22-3.16 (m, 4H), 3.07-3.01 (m, 4H). LCMS Method 4-Tr=1.03 min (ES+) (M+H)+ 207.4.
