And (3- bromomethyl-phenyl) -acetic acid ethyl ester (130 mg, 0.50 mmol) and calcium carbonate (300 mg, 3 mmol) were dissolved in water (2 ml) and 1,4-dioxane (2 ml). The reaction mixture was refluxed to give (3-hydroxymethyl- phenyl) -acetic acid ethyl ester (85 mg, yield: 87%, white solid).
