8.1 The first step: the preparation of ethyl 2-hydroxynicotinate (8-a)
2-Hydroxynicotinic acid (2.78 g, 20 mmol) and concentrated sulfuric acid (2 mL) were dissolved in ethanol (20 mL) at room temperature. After the addition was complete, the reaction solution was stirred at 90°C for 8 hours. The reaction solution was concentrated, diluted with water (20 mL), and adjusted to pH=7-8 with sodium bicarbonate powder. The reaction solution was extracted three times with chloroform, and the organic phase was concentrated under reduced pressure to obtain ethyl 2-hydroxynicotinate (8-a) (2.2 g, yield 65.9%)
