A solution of 3-methyl-6-(trifluoromethyl)pyridazine (400 mg, 2.47 mmol) and NBS (483 mg, 2.71 mmol) in CC14(8 mL) was treated with 2,2'-azobis(2- methylpropionitrile) (81 mg, 0.493 mmol), stirred at 8o°C for 16 hours and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by flash chromatography (ISCO; 12 g SepaFlash, 0-18% EtOAc in petroleum ether) to afford 3-(bromomethyl)-6-(trifluoromethyl)pyridazine (168 mg, 28%) as a red oil.
