Preparation of 2-methyl-3-(methylthio)propanoic acid

Powdered potassium hydroxide (1.0 g, 18 mmol, 2.2 equiv) and iodomethane (570 μL, 9.2 mmol, 1.1 equiv) were sequentially added to a stirred solution of 3-mercapto-2-methylpropanoic acid (1.0 g, 8.3 mmol, 1.0 equiv) in methanol (3.7 mL) at 23° C.
The resulting white suspension was heated to 65° C. and stirred for 2 h.
The cooled reaction mixture was diluted with a 1M solution of hydrochloric acid (50 mL) and extracted with ethyl acetate (2*50 mL).
The combined organic layers were dried (Na2SO4), gravity-filtered, and concentrated by rotary evaporation to afford the title compound as a yellow oil (1.0 g, 91%): 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ 2.70-2.89 (m, 2H), 2.57 (dd, J=12, 6 Hz, 1H), 2.13 (s, 3H), 1.30 (d, J=7 Hz, 3H).
