To a stirred solution of 5-nitropicolinaldehyde (350 g, 2.3mmol, 1.0 eq) in methanol (10 mL) was added NaBH4 (82 mg, 2.3 mmol, 1.0 eq) at 0 °C and resulting reaction mixture was stirred for 2 h. The reaction mixture was evaporated and residue dissolved in ethyl acetate (20 mL), washed with brine (30 mL), dried over sodium sulphate, evaporated to get (5-nitropyridin-2-yl)methanol (0.210 g, 60 %).
