Ammonium nitrate was added to a solution of ethyl 1-methyl-1H-pyrazole-3-carboxylate (460 mg) in trifluoroacetic acid (5 mL) and the mixture was stirred at ambient temperature for 2 h. The volatiles were removed under reduced pressure and the residue was treated with water and was extracted with CH2Cl2. The combined organic layers were dried and the volatiles were removed under reduced pressure. The residue was purified through washing with Et2O to yield the desired compound (90% yield).
