To a suspension of the appropriate 6-chloro-[1,3,5]triazine-2,4-diamine (3)(20 mmol) in ethanol (25 ml) was added hydrazine hydrate (5 ml, 100 mmol). The mixture was then heated to reflux and maintained at this temperature for 3 hours. After this time the mixture was cooled to room temperature where the solid was filtered and washed with ethanol (2×20 ml) to give the desired product as a white crystalline solid that was suitably pure to be used without any further purification
